CHOOSING THE DRESS

MY EXPERIENCE
TERRIBLE. I went to the store thinking I know what I want and knowing I would be open to suggestions but everything that is on my budget at that store was too bridal for my liking and everything waaaay over my budget is something I would consider wearing but obviously cannot afford. Everything I tried on, I didn't feel comfortable in; I felt very insecure of my body and my budget (I was never sad about my budget but it is very hard to stick to it when everyone else is telling you that you can't find something in that price range. Later on, you will see, I proved them wrong -- as I almost always do!).

WHAT I LEARNED
I left the store empty handed, needless to say (and traumatized). I went home, reassessed my choices (that includes not being able to bring myself to spend thousands for a dress I will wear for one day) and started shopping online. I know it is risky to shop online for a wedding dress but I have always shopped online (why am I doubting it now when it always worked for me, I don't know). I realized I am not the 'normal' bride and have always liked the 'alternative bride' look. I never let anyone tell me what to wear so why start now? I did my homework and found THE ONE.

WHAT I ENDED UP WITH
I found this local seamstress on Etsy from a small town in Quebec who could make my skirt for $200 (ONLY!!!). We chatted quite a lot about the look I was going for, I showed her some pictures and next thing you know, she was making me the wedding skirt of my dreams!

THE SEARCH FOR THE TOP
I found the perfect skirt, now I have to find the perfect top. I initially just wanted to wear a backless flimsy top but I ended up with this amazing RTW lace bondage dress for $25 (which I also bought online) and I then put my skirt over that teeny dress. My dress as a top was cream (again, not everyone's comfortable not wearing white or ivory on their wedding day).

BRIDE'S TIP
Do not try on wedding dresses when you have your period or when you are hungry!
Also not everyone can pull off the Alternative Bride look. You have to be so sure of yourself and your style before you decide to be one. For me it was a little easier because I've done fashion and wardrobe styling for many years and I have always stood by the fact that you don't have to spend tons to look good!

REGRETS...I HAVE A FEW!
I wish I didn't bring that many people when I was searching for my dress. To be honest, I wish I went myself BUT doesn't mean my girls were useless because in fact, I learned so much from that experience and from them (my gals have very strong opinions, to say the least).

THE ONE! w/o steaming it yet - I didn't even care if it showed my heart surgery scar, TBH, I wanted to show it off for the first time!

I changed my top during the reception. Also one of the perks of just buying a skirt instead of a dress!
